Bing - Microsoft’s New Decision Engine Done Right!

// May 30th, 2009 // Software, Tech, Videos

Let’s face it, in the recent years of search engine wars, Microsoft’s Live Search has fallen dramatically short of the “most used engine” prize against search giant Google, as well as even Yahoo!, despite the company’s steep decline in market share and credibility. Despite numerous promotions giving those who would switch to Live Search discounts on Ebay purchases, rewards products based on how many searches in a day you performed, and even double cash back rewards for participating sponsors (ex: Foot Locker and Lenovo), Live Search has been unable to make a dent in Google’s majority market share. Not for long, though. In an attempt to increase their presence in the online search engine business, Microsoft has developed an amazing new mashup-style engine that will not only give you intuitive search results, but also provide you with competitive rates on airfare, lodging, retail products, and more…all without leaving their site. This “decision engine”, as Microsoft calls it, has been named Bing, and I for one believe it will give Google a real run for it’s money, allowing that Microsoft improves their search algorithm to something greater than what Live Search has. Additionally, Microsoft has stated that it will not force Bing on anybody. Naturally it will be the default IE search engine in new Windows based computers starting this Christmas, however the default engine can be easily changed to that of an alternate engine, should the user prefer. Given the details at hand, I for one am proud of Microsoft for changing their methodologies of gaining market share from that of statistical manipulation and what would otherwise be unfair practices (if they were to succeed, that is, which they didn’t with Live Search), to more of a business oriented values based playing field.

Take a look at the below video to see more of what Bing promises to achieve.

    The Live Search application on the smartphone was useful. Now it completely broken. Another sucky attempt by Microsoft.

    The interface is nice, but the homepage is too media enriched for my taste, and I don’t think a lot of Google users will appreciate that. Otherwise, I like it’s no nonsense approach and user friendly navigation bar. Search engine users should be able to find what they want, when they need it. Cut the bullshit. And this is definitely an improvement over Live search. So will I start using it over Google? Probably not.

    Okay, the video search is cool. This thing may take some time and effort. It is tough running up against google and yahoo.

    majd, do you work for Microsoft?? I would need to put it through its paces for a couple of weeks before I would commit such a statement.

    I love it, its now my default search engine and my homepage. Amazing new service by ms, definitely better than google in SOOO many aspects, from the accuracy of the searches, to the categories available, as well the advanced images, videos, travel and shopping service. seriously, waw.

    If it is any comfort it is the only Microsoft product that I am not fond of.

    @Doug - What do you mean, “Back to the drawing board”? The only issue involving Bing currently is that IE6 has a glitch that errors out when attempting to change the default search provider. Bing itself works great. As for anybody knocking MS’s decision to make Bing the default engine on IE6, why wouldn’t they? Would Google put Yahoo! as the default engine for Chrome? Nope.

    Back to the drawing board. What a mess this is.

  11. Tom Tom says:

    As long as they keep giving me free money through their “cashback” program on eBay, I’ll keep buying gold coins and keep using MS Search… er, Live Search… er, Bling

    something new for me to learn, from i hear its great.

    >Bob - You can start now. Point your browser to http://www.bing.com. (I’ve updated the link above, as well).

    >Sandi - It’s not for everybody, as some may find it clutter some with all the information presented. However, those with smartphone devices will especially love it as it minimizes the necessity to click so many links. Give it a try, because as they say, you can’t judge a book by its cover. You’ve only seen the cover. If you like MSN so much, you’ll probably like this.

    “Bing” looks stupid and cheap. I dislike it tremendously. Previously, I always used msn search live. I will now switch.
